The Basics of Business Financials
Financial management is a crucial aspect of any thriving business. It’s not just accounting specialists that deal with spreadsheets, figures and the financial side of business. As a manager, it is highly likely that you will have to analyze a spreadsheet or financial statement at some time.
In this session, you will learn about the fundamentals of a business and financial analysis. You will also gain a better understanding of the practical implications of your organization’s financial records.
If you would like to have a better understanding of finance and accounting, this is the session for YOU.
Using interactive and practical examples, participants in this sessions will be taught how to anaylze and translate financial records. These lessons will act as a guide to help participants make better decisions that can positively impact the financial health of their organization.
Particpants will also learn:
- Overview of financial reports – balance sheet, income statement, cash flow
- Financial statement analysis – return on investment, liquidity etc.
- Overview of what certain acronyms stand for i.e. ROI (return on investment), EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization)
- Implications of accounting and financial documents.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Judy Mathieson is principal of Judy Mathieson Ltd, Strategic Leadership Development. She previously enjoyed a 23-year career at Scotiabank, culminating in the role of Director and Market Lead, Scotia Private Client Group for Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario. She has been a sessional instructor at Asper, (Compensation) and has been a facilitator in the CMA Strategic Leadership Program.
She is actively involved in the new Chartered Professional Accounting Program. She has previously served on the Board of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce (Treasurer), and is currently a member of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Economic Competitiveness Leadership Council. Judy’s greatest professional joy has been watching individuals she has mentored develop and take on greater challenges in their careers.
