Kane Biotech Granted United States Patent for Oral Care Technology

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (July 15, 2009) - Kane Biotech Inc. (TSX-V:KNE), a biotechnology company engaged in the development of products that prevent and disperse microbial biofilms is pleased to announce the issuance of Patent No. 7,556,807 entitled “Signal peptides, nucleic acid molecules and methods for treatment of caries” by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This is the second patent to issue protecting Kane Biotech’s CSP (Competence Stimulating Peptide) technology.

The ‘807 patent discloses and claims a method of inhibiting dental plaque and treating plaque- associated conditions such as dental caries and periodontal disease using analogues of CSP peptide in oral care formulations. Dr. Dennis Cvitkovitch (Dental Research Institute, University of Toronto), discoverer of CSP in Streptococcus mutans demonstrated the ability of CSP analogue peptides to inhibit streptococcal biofilm (dental plaque) formation.

“This quorum-sensing peptide technology provides a novel target for developing oral care products using CSP analogues that competitively inhibit CSP-mediated pathway and therefore hinder the formation of dental plaque”, stated Dr. Sri Madhyastha, Vice President, Research and Chief Scientific Officer of Kane Biotech. “This oral prophylactic strategy specifically disarms virulent target bacteria while leaving beneficial bacteria unharmed during therapy, with a side benefit of minimizing the chances of bacteria developing resistance.”

About Kane Biotech Inc.

Kane Biotech is a biotechnology company engaged in the development of products to prevent and disperse biofilms. Biofilms develop when bacteria and other microorganisms form a protective matrix that acts as a shield against attack. When in a biofilm, bacteria become highly resistant to antibiotics, biocides, disinfectants, high temperatures and host immune responses. This resiliency contributes to human health problems such as recurrent urinary tract infections, medical device associated infections and tooth decay.

Kane Biotech uses patent protected technologies based on molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation/dispersal and methods for finding compounds that inhibit or disrupt biofilms. The Company has evidence that these technologies have potential to significantly improve the ability to prevent and/or destroy biofilms in several medical and industrial applications.
