Manitoba is establishing Research Manitoba

June 2014

Manitoba is establishing Research Manitoba, a new research funding organization that will bring together Manitoba’s existing research funding sources into a single coordinated organization.

Research Manitoba is being built on the administrative and governance structure of the MHRC.

The Manitoba government is a strong supporter of research at post-secondary and other research institutions; this support will continue through the work of Research Manitoba.

Research Manitoba is a research-funding, advisory and coordinating body that will:

• bring major, provincial research-funding programs together under one entity
• take on an advisory and co-ordination role across all research disciplines
• encourage the research community to create partnerships to better leverage funding from national and international programs
• focus on existing strengths and emerging opportunities in the province’s research community to help Manitoba strengthen its position as a national and international leader
• ensure research funding is awarded in strategic priority areas under the guidance of business and research expertise

Research Manitoba’s Mandate:

To promote and support, and coordinate the funding of, research in the health, natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities in Manitoba.

By the fall 2015 the MHRC expects to be fully integrated into Research Manitoba.

During the transition all current staff and board members will remain constant. In the coming months Additional board members will be appointed to ensure more representation from other fields of research and from the business community. Additional staff will be added in the next few months.

There will be no impact to current grants and awards (including multi-year awards) that MHRC recipients hold or have recently been awarded; the funding is secure.

Research Manitoba will complete the MHRC’s funding objectives review and will ensure that the organization’s programs meet the needs of and build capacity within the health research community.

What’s Next?
