Gowlings named firm of the year in multiple categories at 2014 LMG Life Sciences Awards

Gowlings has once again been recognized for its unparalleled expertise in the life sciences industry, earning five awards at the second annual LMG Life Sciences Awards ceremony on Sept. 17 in New York.

The firm took home awards for Canadian Patent Contentious Firm of the Year, Canadian Financial & Transactional Firm of the Year, Canadian Product Liability Firm of the Year, Canadian Patent Impact Case of the Year and Canadian Patent Litigation Attorney of the Year.

“We’re honoured to be included among the top life sciences firms and professionals in the industry,” said Scott Jolliffe, Gowlings Chair and CEO. “These five awards represent our commitment to delivering practical legal advice and exceptional results to our clients at every stage of their business life cycle.”

Gowlings received the award for Canadian Patent Impact Case of the Year following its work on Sanofi-Aventis v. Apotex Inc. With a team that included Anthony Creber, Marc Richard, Livia Aumand and Isabel Raasch, the firm represented Sanofi and its marketing partner, Bristol-Myers Squibb Sanofi Pharmaceuticals Holding Partnership, in a 2013 case before the Federal Court of Appeal that saw the court overturning a trial decision that had invalidated Sanofi’s patent for the blockbuster drug Plavix® (clopidogrel bisulfate).

Christopher Van Barr was named Canadian Patent Litigation Attorney of the Year. A partner in Gowlings’ Ottawa office, Van Barr represents international life sciences clients as their lead trial and appeal counsel in patent infringement, PM(NOC), and trade secret litigation cases.

The Legal Media Group introduced its Life Sciences Awards in 2013 to celebrate the achievements of the leading life sciences law firms and practitioners in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. The firm was represented at this year’s awards event in New York by Christopher Van Barr and Omar Nassif.

With over 150 legal professionals across Canada and internationally, Gowlings’ renowned Life Sciences Group provides cross-disciplinary insight and practical, cost-effective legal advice to a full spectrum of clients in the life sciences sector — from investors, underwriters and public issuers to innovative startups and multinational brands.
