Lisa Bako has over 25 years of experience working with high-tech start-ups and research institutions, with the last 20 years focused exclusively on health-related initiatives and novel medical devices. She specializes in designing and delivering sales and marketing strategies for the medical device sector, in addition to leading contract negotiations, program management, and relationship management of customers and strategic partners. Lisa is responsible for spearheading Cubresa’s global preclinical and clinical sales to leading research centres, in addition to managing strategic partnerships for the company.

QUESTION 1)
Q: What is it like to be a woman in bioscience?
A: It's amazing! I can't image being in a different field.
QUESTION 2)
Q: Who or what inspired you to work in the bioscience industry?
A: I have always been intrigued with medicine. Having lost loved ones to diseases like Alzheimer’s has inspired me to continue working in this sector. The hope is to have an impact in some small way.

Q: Who are your women role models and not necessarily in science?
A: I had a wonderful friend and mentor, Lynne Dorward. I'm sad to say she passed away earlier this year, but I'm so incredibly grateful to have had her in my life. She broke through so many barriers in her career - a real inspiration. She defined perseverance, determination, and success - both personally and professionally.

Q: Do you think there are particular structural roadblocks that impede the progress of women in science?
A: I know there have been, but I see those roadblocks coming down. There are incredible opportunities out there and I believe more young women today are choosing careers in STEM.

Q: Would you say that through your career, things have become better for women working in the bioscience industry?
A: Absolutely! I am happy to see the progress that has been made over the last 25 years.

Q: How did you reach your level of success, given the sector’s gender gap, especially among leadership?
A: I believe that challenging myself and stepping outside my comfort zone has helped propel me to where I am today. I also work with incredible people which I am extremely grateful for.

Q: What are the biggest obstacles you had to overcome?
A: On occasion, self-doubt. Taking on new challenges and believing you can do it. Very motivational to try something new and realize you're capable of so much more than you thought!

Q: If you had the option to give advice to a younger version of yourself, what would that be?
A: Don't let fear stop you. Continue to challenge and push yourself. It’s okay to be scared….you can do it!
