R30

April 21, 2018 is a date and event not to be missed as the RBC Convention Centre will host pioneer researchers, doctors, alumni, donors, and supporters of St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre, in celebration of 30 years of world-class and life-altering research.

In 1987, five heart researchers opened labs at St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre. The Centre now numbers over 30 laboratories and 250 staff in cardiovascular sciences, neurodegenerative disorders, agri-food and clinical research, with contributions to science including over 2000 publications, and graduation of more than 450 Bachelor of Science, Masters of Science, and PhD students, many of which have gone on to careers in industry, science, medicine, and politics.

Highlights and milestones of the Centre include:

  • For the past six years, St. Boniface Hospital Research has been ranked the number one research-intensive hospital-based research centre in Western Canada, and in the top 10 in all of Canada.
  • St. Boniface Hospital Research has impacted health care worldwide, with research discoveries in immune disorders, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and vascular diseases.
  • Multi-million dollar spinoff companies include Intelligent Hospital Systems, Medicure, Inc., Monteris Medical, and startup companies such as WinSanTor, Viotika Life Sciences and Intrinsic Analytics.
  • Over 30 years, researchers have attracted well over 200 million dollars from granting agencies into Manitoba, and created over 250 high quality jobs each year, with an economic impact on the Province that is measured in billions.
  • For every dollar provided by the Government of Manitoba, another ten are generated through the research activities at the Albrechtsen Research Centre.
  • In addition to hosting over 500 visiting speakers and scientists from around the globe, St. Boniface Hospital Research scientists have been invited to present over 2000 times in over 60 countries around the world.
  • • St. Boniface Hospital Research is active in the community - through inner city youth programs such as Hoops from the Heart, and in-school science education through the It’s All About Me program.
  • Over 50,000 children aged 12-18 have received state of the art science instruction within the Centre’s RBC Youth BIOlab Jeunesse.
