Writing Standard Operating Procedures

OCT 2019 Writing SOP.png (154 KB)

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are essential for helping us understand how to carry out complex operations but we all hate reading and more importantly writing them. They are often very long, redundant, overly detailed, and hard to comprehend. This is a waste of time and money and opens our organizations up to risk. Although regulations dictate what companies must do, they don’t clearly explain how to do it.

This training session will cover ideas on audience analysis, document structure, version control, clear language, common SOP terminology, and editing. There will be time to incorporate the techniques into an existing SOP so bring samples of current documents or a work-in-progress.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand common terminology
  • Understand the purpose of SOPs
  • Determine the audience for their document
  • Develop and use structured SOP templates
  • Write a clear, concise, and complete information
  • Edit their own and others’ documents

There will be time to incorporate the techniques into an existing SOP so bring samples of current documents or a work-in-progress.
